For installing on existing slate or asphalt shingle roofs. Stainless steel or galvanized snow guards. High quality, durable stainless steel retrofit snow guards for installation on existing or new roofs (stainless steel is one of the strongest metals with a very high tensile strength). Or, if you want real economy, buy the galvanized model.

Berger has over 100 years of experience in manufacturing one of the most complete lines of snow retention products with a guard to fit nearly any type of roofing & budget, including slate.

Snow guards should be installed where the potential for the sudden sliding of ice and snow can be hazardous to people or property below. Falling snow is a life safety issue, and careful consideration of liability issues should be part of a carefully designed roof system in all areas prone to winter snow and ice.

The following recommendation is for a typical application, slate size 12 inches x 18 inches, with a 7 1/2 inch exposure, and a roof pitch of 12/12 (45 degrees). This is a typical example, and can be used and adjusted for differing conditions such as high snow loads, or drifting conditions. For this example, the rafter length is 18 feet.

Guards shall be installed in horizontal rows parallel to the eave. The first row shall be installed on the third course of slate, and spaced no more than 24 inches apart in the rows. Subsequent rows shall be spaced 30 inches vertically (4th slate course) and the guards offset 12 inches from the course below. Install 6 horizontal rows. The preceding technical information is for informational purposes only and is not intended to replace the manufacturer's recommendations for a particular project. We will provide layouts upon receipt of roof plan with elevations. Manufacturer is not responsible for improper installation, or installation in insufficient quantities.
