Reviews:

• HortIdeas: "We think the Humanure [Hand]Book ranks right up there with Rachel Carson's Silent Spring as one of the most important environmental exposes of all time."

• Midwest Book Review "Despite all the books on manure and how to use it, human manure composting is not covered elsewhere, making THE HUMANURE HANDBOOK: A GUIDE TO COMPOSTING HUMAN MANURE a fine reference for any who would learn these basics. If you're an avid composter, there's nothing like this on the market."

• Whole Earth Review: “Finally we have a comprehensive book on recycling human excrement without chemicals, high technology, or pollution. Well written, practical, and thoroughly researched..."

• Countryside Journal: “. . .almost certain to become a classic in its field.” “This book should be required reading . . . and not only for homesteaders.”

Stortz Tools has finally come out with a new hand-held roofing slate cutter that looks like it could become the standard roofing slate cutting tool in the trade. It's based on the old classic Pearson cutter design that was so popular for decades until Pearson went out of business and they became unavailable. Stortz has improved upon the Pearson design by including a better hole punch and reinforcing the shaft where it is hammered when punching holes. The beauty of this slate cutter is that it will cut both concave and convex curves (when the side supports are not bolted on), and you can cut standing up with it, such as when you're working in a valley or standing on a hook ladder. It's easy to carry it around on a roof because you don't need a board base. This is probably the best all-around roofing slate cutter we have seen so far.

Here's a video showing how to use this slate cutter.
