SNOW GUARD - the "S&S" snowguard

16 ounce copper - The price shown is for use on roofs with 16" or 18" long slate, which requires a snow guard strap of about 11" in length. The snow guard strap comes pre-punched with nails holes along the top edge and it nails just above the top edge of the slate. This allows the snow guards to be installed in a uniform pattern even on random-width slate roofs. For longer slates, the snow guards may cost a bit more.

The S&S snow guard was designed in house and was tested, not only by S&S, but also at the laboratories of Tox Pressotechnik in Warrenville, IL. All of our snow guards can be used on all roofing applications.

Snow Guards are an essential ingredient when it comes to overall design of slate, copper, tile, or standing seam roofs. Some shingle and wood roofs might also find benefits from installing snow guards. There are many different reasons that snow guards are essential. When snow avalanches, it travels in heavy sheet-like chunks, sometimes the length of your roof. On its way down it can adversely effect many different things.

First is ice dam formation. An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into a home and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas. How snow guards can help prevent ice dams is by causing the snow to freeze around the snow guard which allows the ice build-up in the gutter to start melting.

Second is the eave and gutter system. That much weight and force can have a crippling effect on them, leaving them inoperable. Properly installed snow guards will break up or even stop avalanching snow long before it reaches the eave.

Finally, any object under the eaves, such as landscaping or vehicles, can become severely damaged by falling snow and ice.

Basic installation: There are many different variations when it comes to installing snow guards on your roof. Basic installations on a slate roof is on the 3rd 5th and 7th row approximately 24 inches apart in a W pattern.
